Why let winter get you down!
The Louisville Zoo is open year-round. Come and discover the many things going on at the Zoo during the winter months. Education programs will give you the opportunity to visit exotic places around the world without having to pack your suitcases or get on an airplane.

Family Programs

Bring the family and learn together about the world we live in. This program is designed for families with children four years old and up. Meet your instructor at the Front Gate and learn with us! Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“Breakfast with the Orangutans”

Saturday, Feb. 18, (8:30 – 10 a.m.)

Escape the winter blues with this delightful and delicious program. Families will be able to explore the world of orangutans while dining. A simple continental breakfast will be served while the orangutans eat their breakfast too. A keeper will join the group and share information about orangutan behavior and what it is like to work with these intelligent animals!

Cost per session:

Individual: Regular $20; Members $15

“Breakfast with the Bears”

Saturday, March 10, (8:30–10 a.m.)

Bring your own Teddy Bear for this class. Learn together about Polar bears and Grizzly bears. Hands-on activities will take place along with a simple continental breakfast served in the Louisville Zoo’s new classroom in Glacier Run.

Cost per session:

Individual: Regular $20; Members $15

NEW! – “COME IN AND DIG IN”

(Two- or three-year-olds and an adult)

Come and GET DIRTY! This class is all about DIRT. Learn about things that sprout, dig, burrow and eat dirt through fun activities and “hands-on” exploration. Wear your DIRTY clothes because you’re sure to get DIRTY. The 90 minute program is designed specifically to meet the developmental needs of this age group and to build on their sense of curiosity about the world around them. Program includes story time, special animal guests, learning & exploring stations and a guided walking tour. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.

Spring Break Camp 2012

(Ages 6-12)

Turn Spring Break into a wild and wonderful animal safari! This fun and educational program will explore a variety of themes through Zoo walks, close up contact with several MetaZoo educational animals, as well as crafts and activities. This program is designed for ages 6-12. Campers are divided into small groups based on their age. Campers should bring a sack lunch with a drink.

April 9 – 13, (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

Two by Two

(Two-year-old and an adult)

These programs are designed with the two year old in mind. The child MUST have reached the age of two by the date of the class. These playful, one-hour classes include circle time, learning stations and a special animal guest before heading out on a guided walking tour of part of the Zoo.

“Spring Peepers”

This is an introductory class for you and your two-year-old to discover together “new” animals that you might see in spring.

Two by Three

(Three-year-old and an adult)

These programs are designed specifically to meet the developmental needs of the three year old child. This one-hour class includes circle time, learning stations and a special animal guest before heading out on a guided walking tour of part of the Zoo. The child MUST have reached the age of three by the date of the class.

“Who’s Peeking out of that Hole?”

You and your three-year-old will be able to team together and investigate those creatures that live underground.

ZOOper Kids

This program for four and five-year-old children includes a guided Zoo walk, “hands-on” activities, closely supervised contact with education program animals and lots of information about animals to satisfy the curiosity of young minds.

“Worms for Dinner”

Participants will be young scientists as they explore and discover what earthworms are all about. This program is for children only.

“Breakfast with the Butterflies”

Saturday, May 19, (8:30–10 a.m.)

Enjoy a simple continental breakfast and be surrounded by the beautiful Etscorn Garden that should be in full bloom at this time of year. Learn about butterflies and how to attract them to your own yard. In case of inclement weather this program will be held indoors.

Home School Programs (Home School Pride)

Lions and lionesses… gather your home school cubs for the Louisville Zoo’s new exclusive classes designed to meet your specific needs. These 90 minute programs will include content based topics based on national science standards. Animal contact, “hands-on” activities, and a short Zoo walk will keep youngsters ages 5–8 engaged. A different topic will be offered each month. Pre-registration is required.

Batty for Bats

January 30, 2012  (1:30 - 3 p.m.)

The United Nations has declared 2012 as "The International Year of the Bat" and we are ready to celebrate! Join our education staff and other home school students in learning more about these wonderfully diverse (and often misunderstood) creatures through hands-on activities and a visit to the HerpAquarium to see the Vampire bats and then to Islands to see the Rodrigues fruit bats.

Resourceful Re-users

February 27, 2012 (1:30 - 3 p.m.)

This program will emphasize how being more mindful consumers can both help the environment and preserve the habitats of animals all around the world! A visit to see a few animals that both benefit from our own efforts will be included. Participants will learn creative ways to reuse items for both function and fun!

Cue the Chlorophyll

March 26, 2012 (1:30 - 3 p.m.)

Spring has sprung and it is time to stop and smell the roses! Explore plants and how they grow with fun sensory activities and a tour of the Louisville Zoo greenhouse. Prepare to get dirty as you dig and plant your very own flower to take home.

Dinosaur Discovery

April 30, 2012 (1:30 - 3 p.m.)

Long after the demise from the earth, these mighty creatures still capture our imagination today. Participants will learn to identify dinosaur characteristics by examining modern day animals and enjoy a guided walk of the Zoo's new dinosaur exhibit.

NEW! – Stroller Safari (online registration available)

February 15, (9–10 a.m.)

It’s never too early to introduce your youngster to the Zoo world. These casual classes will include playful activities especially designed for toddlers. It might be cold outside but the Zoo’s new classroom in Glacier Run will give you great views of bear country while keeping everyone warm. Music, story time and an animal encounter will satisfy everyone’s curiosity about the world around them. No child is too young for this program. Suggested ages 6 to 24 months. Pre-registration is required.

Safari Day Camp

Introduce your child to a camp experience found in few other places. Camp activities are age-appropriate and will include nature study, arts and crafts, controlled animal contact and Zoo walks. All campers receive a Safari Day Camp t-shirt. Camps are Monday through Friday with the exception of the week of the Fourth of July. Children attending full day sessions from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. must bring a sack lunch and a drink. Lunches will be refrigerated.

Half Day: Regular $125; Members $110

Full Day: Regular $195; Members $180

Animals Around the Clock

Do you ever wonder why some animals are awake at night and some are awake during the day? Discover how the rhythm of the day and night and the seasons throughout the year affect animal behavior.

Let’s Eat!

Animals survive by eating a wide variety of foods. Campers will learn about what animals eat in the wild and at the Zoo. A visit to the Zoo’s Commissary where most of the animal diets are prepared will be one of the many special experiences planned for the week.

I Will Survive!

From camouflage to echolocation, all animals have special characteristics that help them to survive in the wild. Campers will explore the various survival techniques of the plant and animal kingdoms.

Planet of Plenty

Biodiversity is the variety of life on our planet – and there’s plenty of it! Campers will learn about the wealth of habitats that house all life forms and the interconnections that tie us together.

required to create a new exhibit and they will meet several staff members that help make our Zoo possible.

Zoo Detective

Every day brings a new mystery at the Zoo! Campers will explore the Zoo and learn problem solving skills to crack the case of the day. Join the fun and be a safari sleuth!

TRACK ‘EM, SMACK ‘EM, AND ROAR

The Louisville Tennis Center, the Louisville Nature Center and the Louisville Zoo will again be offering a week of non-stop excitement for children ages 8 – 12. Campers will be tracking native wildlife at the Louisville Nature Center, learning tennis skills on the courts of the Louisville Tennis Center, and visiting with the wild creatures at the Louisville Zoo. Both sessions are identical.

If your child has a tennis racket we suggest that he/she bring it. Each participant must bring a lunch and dress appropriately for outside play (tennis shoes are required).
Cost: Regular $195; LNC or Zoo Members $180

TEEN SAFARI

8th-9th Grade

Teen Safari is designed to activate the minds of young people using the wonderful resources of the Louisville Zoo. Classes, activities and behind-the-scenes tours provide an opportunity for teens to discover more about the Zoo, our planet, and personal choices. Three sessions are offered. *Note: Teens attend camp for the grades they are entering into for the 2012-2013 school year.

Cost: $180 Members, $195 Non-Members


Mythbusters – Zoo Style!

Myth, or fact? “Dinosaurs are just big lizards.” “Polar bears eat penguins.” “Snakes smell fear.” Join us to gain a better appreciation for our amazing natural world through observation, experimentation and hands-on fun. Learn about the scientific method and satisfy your curiosity about some really strange things, too! Nothing will be blown up, but we bet you will have a blast!

Session 1: June 11-15

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Thursday 7 p.m.-Friday 9 a.m.

Teen Safari Sessions 1 and 2 will meet Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. On
Thursday evening participants will meet at the Zoo at 7 p.m. for the Night Safari which ends at
9 a.m. Friday morning.

Note: An evening cookout and breakfast will be provided for the Night Safari. Monday through
Wednesday each teen should bring a sack lunch and drink.

Conservation Crusaders!

Conservation-minded teens unite! Did you ever think about working at a Zoo, or another career in the field of conservation? Lots of people dedicate their careers to protecting our planet, and your actions make a difference, too! Join us to learn about how our staff, others in our community, and YOU can create a better world for all living things. We’ll talk to keepers, speakers from local agencies, and each other to become leaders in this exciting arena!

Session 3: July 16-20

Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Note: Teen Safari Session 3 will meet Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.- 4p.m. Each teen should bring a sack lunch and drink each day.

Zoo Sproutz (Ages 2 &3)

This new cool summer program has been redesigned for children 2 and 3 years old and an adult. Activities for this program will take into consideration that youngsters this age are curious about the world around them and have the energy for lots of action! The National Research Council notes that “preschool children have a rich set of ideas, conceptual frameworks, and reasoning skills.” With this in mind they will be encouraged to ask questions and seek answers through exploration. This age appropriate program incorporates learning centers and free play to cultivate children’s’ connections to the natural world around them. Campers must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost per session: (one adult & one child) Regular $95; Members $75

June- Ears, Eyes and Noses, Oh My!

Children will be using their comparative skills while they investigate the features of different types of animals.

July-Body Basics

Ever wonder why elephants have a trunk or why zebras have stripes? Children will explore many special animal characteristics and discover what makes them so unique.

Ani-motion!

Snakes slither, birds fly, fish swim, animals move in many different ways. During this week in class, children will investigate and make comparisons about how animals move.

Classification

What makes a lizard a reptile? Do all birds hatch from eggs? Children will investigate the way animals are grouped together by comparing similar and different traits.

The Five Senses

Cancellation and Refund Policy

  1. Individuals who wish to cancel their registration in any class must notify the Education Department, in writing, no less than one week prior to the actual date of the class. We will refund 80% of the class fee upon receipt of a written or email (danita.robbins@louisvilleky.gov) cancellation.
    There will be no refunds for cancellations made less than one week prior to class date.
  2. The Education Department reserves the right to cancel classes with insufficient registration.
  3. There will be a $10 service charge for any changes in the original registration.
  4. Pre-registration is required for all classes.
