Be a hero!

Free statewide publication teaches
kids how to care for the environment

Everyone can be a conservation hero—even in their own back yard. And the Louisville Zoo is teaching children how to do just that.

The Zoo’s annual Backyard Action Hero Guidebook publication is in the process of being distributed to more than 300,000 students (third through sixth grade) throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana.

The Guidebook, a colorful, kid-friendly magazine produced through a grant from Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, helps children discover ways they can help protect the environment and is chocked full of fun facts and awesome activities that children can do with their teacher at school, by themselves or with family and friends. They find out that it’s not only cool to help with conservation—it can be fun too! The Louisville Zoo is a great place to learn about plants and animals.

The goal of the Guidebook and Backyard Action Hero program is to teach kids about the importance of conservation and inspire them to take action based on what they’ve learned.

The 2008-2009 Backyard Action Hero Guidebook focuses specifically on wetlands like swamps, marshes and bogs. It also includes information on frogs and other animals that depend on wetlands to survive.

The 2008-2009 Guidebook can be downloaded for free at www.louisvillezoo.org/BAH, and additional books can also be picked up at the Zoo free of charge or requested through the website while supplies last.

The 2008-2009 Backyard Action Hero Guidebook is presented by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky and also supported by Publishers Printing, Moonlight Graphic Works, Jefferson County Public Schools and Coca-Cola.
