FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Louisville Zoo partners with Dare to Care again for half-price admission and food drive

The Louisville Zoo is teaming up with Dare to Care Food Bank for the third year offering a special half-price Zoo admission now through February 29, 2012 if guests participate in a canned food drive. Zoo patrons have collected 8000 lbs of food in the past two years, enough for 6000 meals.

To receive the discount on regular Zoo admission, visitors must bring one canned good per person and present it at the Zoo’s ticket window. The offer is valid for regular adult or child admission and not for Santa’s Safari, other special fee-based programs, for pre-paid groups or with other discounts.

Some of Dare to Care Food Bank’s most needed items are canned meats, which includes tuna, pork and beans, hearty canned soups, chicken and dumplings, ham, beef stew, chili with meat sauce, ravioli with meat sauce, spaghetti with meatballs, as well as canned vegetables and fruits, which includes corn, green beans, peas, carrots, peaches, oranges, pineapple and fruit juices. Peanut Butter, Saltines, Rice, Spaghetti, canned Spaghetti Sauce and cold and hot boxed cereal are also needed. Please avoid glass containers.

This half-price discount offers a chance to see Qannik, the polar bear cub that was found orphaned in Alaska and who now calls Glacier Run home. She is currently a healthy 154 pounds and is swimming in the large 80,000 gallon pool at Glacier Run. The best times to see her are from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m.

The Zoo is open daily year round. Fall/winter hours continue through February, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. (exit by 5 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
