FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Louisville Zoo Youth Board Wins Fundraising Award
The Louisville Zoo Youth Board was recognized
by the Greater Louisville chapter of the Association of Fundraising
Professionals today during the 2011 National Philanthropy Day awards
luncheon at the Louisville Marriott Downtown. The Zoo’s Youth Board was
honored with the 2011 Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy award given to
youth under 18. Given by the professional association of individuals
responsible for generating philanthropic support for a wide variety of
nonprofit charitable organizations it was one of six awarded in
different categories at the luncheon.
The Louisville Zoo
Youth Board was founded in 1993 as a way for young people to learn
leadership skills, understand the importance of volunteerism from a
young age and to give back to the community by supporting the activities
of the Zoo. Today, the Youth Board has grown to over 50 members with a
President, Vice-President, Secretary and Historian.
The Youth Board
members raise funds through various activities including face painting,
sand art and temporary tattoos. Most recently, the Youth Board made a
$20,000 commitment to the Zoo’s new Glacier Run, an extraordinary
exhibit that includes polar and grizzly bears, as well as seals and sea
lions. To date the Board has raised over $90,000 for the Louisville
Zoo’s exhibits and important conservation education activities.
In addition to
fundraising efforts, the Youth Board members volunteer at numerous Zoo
events including the annual Halloween Party, and have also been Zoo
ambassadors providing interpretation for the public at exhibits such as
the new Glacier Run. Since 1997, Youth Board members have contributed
more than 14,500 service hours to the Zoo.
